you are here:     Visiting - what to expect

Thinking about visiting?

Great! We'd love to have you visit!
We want you to enjoy your visit.
You won't find "holier-than-thou" people here!
We're not here because we're perfect people.
We're here because we love our Lord who has
forgiven us of our sins!
You will find friendly folks here who'll give you a
smile and a welcoming hand-shake.

What should I wear?

You don't have to dress in formal clothes.
From jeans to a suit, you are welcome here!
But we do ask that you keep in mind that
this is the house of the Lord.
Please dress modestly, not out of respect for us,
but out of respect for the Lord.
I hope this doesn't sound like we're snobbish,
but shorts, for example, are not appropriate.

As a visitor, will I be singled out in any way?

Brother Humble wanted to get a huge spotlight to shine on
visitors, but we talked him out of it. (just kidding!)
No, you won't be put on the spot, singled-out,
or embarrassed in any way.
We'll just give you a visitor's card.
Don't worry... don't fill it out if you'd rather not!
We're very pleased when we have visitors!
And we just use the card to get some basic info about you.

What kind of church is Faith Baptist Temple?

Faith Baptist Temple is a member of the following:
Southern Baptist Convention (national).
Southern Baptists of Texas Convention.
Southern Baptists of Southeast Texas Association.

What is the music like?

Know of a church that uses three different hymnals? FBT does.
The old "Heavenly Highway" hymnals are still in use at FBT!
But there are two other hymnals that we also use.
Occasionally, pre-recorded music is used during specials.
The variety keeps it fresh!

And wow! FBT has great musicians!
Brother Humble, our Pastor, also plays the piano.
He'll tell you himself that he'd like to find
another pianist to take his place...
but he can't find anyone as talented as himself!
(He's kidding... I think? hahaha)
Tony Hanks usually plays the organ.
Debbie Heaslit plays the keyboard.
Sometimes Carol Mathews plays the piano and sometimes the organ.
David Peavy and Hannah Humble play guitars.
Issac Humble plays an accordian and sometimes a guitar.
Now that's a lot of musicians for a little church like FBT!
And they're all great!
Do I sound like I'm bragging?
Well, the baseball great Dizzy Dean said
that it ain't braggin' if you can do it!
And they can!

I have to mention our "mass" choir as Brother Humble calls it.
I just can't figure out why he calls them that.
But the ladies in the choir certainly don't like the term!
All kidding aside, you won't find a more talented choir.
Well... at least not in a church our size!

Anyway, put together the variety, the good musicians,
the talented choir... and ya get some really nice music!
But come find out for yourself!

What are the sermons like?

Our pastor, Brother Mark Humble, relies on the King James Version
of the Bible as the inerrant Word of God.
His sermons are Bible-based and Christ-Centered!
He doesn't just preach "feel good" sermons!
He's never afraid to preach what the Lord leads him to preach!
And yes, sometimes his firey sermons hit home.
They sort of make us uncomfortable as we listen.
But think about it... if we were perfect people,
we wouldn't need that kind of sermon!

If you're looking for a church where the pastor only preaches
"feel-good God is Love" sermons, then you'd better look elsewhere.
God truly is love, but he is much more than just that!
God chastises believers...
as a loving parent corrects an errant child!
Is a parent who never corrects his child is a loving parent?
Absolutely not!

It's painful, but we know God loves us when he chastises us!
Don't misunderstand though, Brother Humble doesn't just preach
about the chastising, wrathful characteristics of God.
He preaches of the awesome and glorious power and love of God!
He preaches about the terrible price that Jesus paid for our sins
with his precious blood!

Although nowadays a lot of preachers won't, Brother Humble still
preaches in no uncertain terms of what ultimately happens to
those who refuse the greatest gift ever given... salvation!
Yes, preaching about hell makes some folks feel "uncomfortable".
Would you prefer eternal damnation in hell just to avoid some
emotional discomfort?

With all this, you may think he's ominous and completely serious.
Not so! Brother Humble is a very happy man! happy in the Lord!
This is obvious not just in the way he lives his life...
but in the way he preaches as well!
I can't remember a sermon when he didn't give us a good laugh!
The Lord loves us!
Isn't that reason enough to be happy, to laugh and have
an enjoyable time at FBT? Short answer... YEP!

In short, Brother Humble preaches what the Lord lays on his heart!
Whether he preaches about some Old Testament prophet...
some great event in Israel's history...
some miracle Jesus performed...
the resurection of Jesus...
or the second coming of Jesus....
one thing is certain, his sermons aren't boring!
